Changed your name after your wedding day? Then you will need your Official Marriage Certificate in order to change your name on your:
- Driver’s license,
- Car registration,
- Bank accounts,
- Electoral enrollment,
- Utility accounts,
- Insurance policies,
- … and so on!
The certificate you receive from your celebrant on your wedding day is just for show. Back in the day, this certificate used to be the official one but not any more. Currently you need to apply to the Births, Deaths and Marriages Department in your state for your Official Marriage Certificate.
How do I apply in South Australia?

You can apply online, by post or in person.
It will take about 10+ days to process your application. The current fee is $55.50.
Your application can be fast-tracked by paying an additional priority fee of $42.25.
Certificates can be picked up from the Consumer and Business Services (CBS) Customer Service Centre, 91 Grenfell Street, Adelaide or sent by express post. There is no extra postage cost to have your fast-tracked certificate sent by express post.
To apply online you will need to upload scanned or photographed images of your identification documents. At least one of your documents must be a current Australian passport, Australian driver’s licence or a Centrelink concession card.
